When it comes to thermal transfer printing, the combination of printer, settings, label stock, and ribbon is crucial. Make sure the printer is in good condition and that you are using a decent, matched label and ribbon. The settings on printing speed, temperature, and pressure need to be right - for example, you won't get a good image when the temperature setting is too low, and too high will burn the film, which is not good for the print head. Setting the temperature where it's just high enough to get a good image is the best for the lifetime of the print head.
